On the subject of careening:  When I had the same idea for my 
Montgomery 17, a friend suggested leaning it over on old tires; he had 
done that with a boat once.

I did not end up trying it because of circumstances.  I will say that 
doing a whole blister job from beneath (lying on my back on the ground 
under the trailer) was not fun.  Stuff constantly falling in my face.

Also, the M-17 has molded in "lapstrakes," which do lend rigidity, plus 
it's a smaller boat.

So, just an idea.
