I'm not sure why people recommend polycarbonate (Lexan). Sure, it's
stronger, but if you *need* that strength, I don't think the aluminum
(or aluminium) rim is going to hold it. I would advise acrylic
(Plexiglas) for normal use. You can cover it with externally mounted
polycarbonate shutters for the Southern Ocean.
My original acrylic windows stood up pretty well for over 30 years.
