[Public-List] Casting Rudder Shoe and Gudgeons

Geroge et al, 

Appears to be gobs of interest in this most important project. How about doing this as a collaborative project for the 50th anniversary of our beloved Alberg 30's? Looks like we have among us a person, Peter McEvoy, who has the facilities to do the casting and perhaps a source for the bronze alloy which might be the best to use. Do we have a retired or non-retired pattern maker amongst us? Actually making the pattern for the pintle/gudgeon would not be that difficult. If we made a wooden pattern we could easily make the pintle a bit larger in design or even a floating pintle which could easily be a service replacement. 

I would strongly recommend against predrilling the castings when finished. Send instructions along with the furnished castings as to how many and what size holes to drill, but allow each individual owner to drill his own holes. This way one size would most likely fit all. Predrilling might just disallow the use of the casting on a particular boat. I suggest to do it as Whitby did it. Drill as you install. 

  

Peter could you write up a mock quote based on what you know now?  You have the basic size and thus the weight of bronze needed. Are you planning on using the lost wax/ceramic shell casting method, or do a conventional sand casting?

I wrote the http://www.alberg30.org/maintenance/Steering/Gudgeons/ page, 
and took the pictures in the top portion. I got that gudgeon from Mike 
Lehman and installed it on Good Week. I had enough presence of mind to 
take the photos, but not to take measurements or to get a mold made.
