Gordon,

If you sandblast the bottom, I think you're going to have a major
restoration project to refair the bottom.  It will eat up the
gelcoat.  I think the best way to remove old paint is the scraper.
Keeping the scraper very sharp (frequent filing) is the key.  That
said, it's still hard work.  I did about 1/3 of our boat, two
years ago, before giving up and paying the yard about $300 to do
the rest.  I don't want to do that again, so have switched to
an ablative bottom paint.
