I am looking forward to it too! Need the rest!
The trip down the coast was great! San Francisco to San Diego is
definitely the easy direction, prevailing winds and currents push
you along. Point Conception can have horrendous weather, kind of
the 'Cape Horn' of the Pacific. We motored around it about 8
miles offshore in a near calm with moderate seas, overcast and
fog, never saw it. Anticlimactic! No war stories there. At
last Sea Dance now lies comfortably in Chula Vista Marina.
We got in yesterday at 2 PM after leaving SFO 12 hours early
(outgoing tide, the boat and provisions were ready). The trip
was 94 hours total, real good time. We were all exhausted when
we went out the Gate (bad move).
"Small Craft Advisories" for "Hazardous Seas" by the Coast Guard
were in effect when we went out the Golden Gate. That was not a
problem at all but it was a very rough ride. We all had a rough
night and the next day too. Alan got sick as usual (hence the
name 'Cap'n Hurl), the rest of us were NOT feeling good either.
Winds were moderate to very light to NONE, we motored about 80
hours, not the ideal by a long shot but a good trip overall.
Andrew (Alan's 14 year old) was very good crew, no whining at
all, and was very responsible on the night watches. Always
willing to lend a hand and no fear.
Isabel has grown up a bit after her first year away from home,
when she awoke me for my watch she gave report with military
precision. When she was done I knew exactly what was going on
out there, what all the contacts had been and if anything was
developing (coastwise traffic on the California coast is like the
LA freeway but no stripes to follow). A ship can come out of the
fog and be on top of you in minutes, some times you just don't
figure out if they are about to run you down or pass safely till
they dissapear in the fog again. Can make for a true "Charmin
Moment".
You can hear the war stories next week. There realy are none but
I will make some up for you.
We are hopping in the Suburban later this morning and going down
to Punta Banda for the weekend, see you next week.
Isabel needs to interview with three different local Blockbuster
Video stores for a transfer as MANAGER! She will be here on her
own till we come home Sunday.
Love, Peter
