Hi Carleton,
I'm no expert, but the things that have come to my attention are;
Mast step support-it seems many owners have had to put extra beams beneath the
mast step. I think there is a prefab aluminum one available for the purpose.
Check any prospective purchase to see if this vital area has already been
strengthened.
Seacocks- some of the seacocks were 'homemade' by whitby, and have failed and
sunk boats. Examine all the seacocks on your prospect-replace any that look
questionable. I won't get into the marlon vs. bronze debate here.
Rudder gudgeons, pintles, and rudder post head- play in any of these
components means wear. All the parts are replaceable, and there are good
articles in the Maintainance manual, as well as help on this list.
I havent heard of any inherent weakness in the rig-quite the contrary. The
mast wall is thicker than it should be for a thirty footer, and shroud and
stay diameters are more than adequate. Examine the wooden spreaders for
soundness-there is an aluminum replacement available. Make sure chainplate
deck leaks havent softened the bulkheads where the chainplates attach.
Deck laminate-Pre 1967 or so boats had masonite cores in the decks, and this
seems to be more tolerant to deck leaks than later balsa cored decks. Deck
delamination can be repaired, but it is messy, slow work.

Apart from these problems, which you would find on any older boat, if not
more, the A30 is well worth your interest. They are great sailing boats. The
classic lines of a Carl Alberg hull will thrill you as you row away from your
vessel every time.

I'm sure my friends on the list here willcorrect my mistakes, fill in what I
have forgotten, or never knew. I only have my boat one year.

Best of Luck,
Lee Trachtenberg
