The area that wood came out of is at the back of the iron ballast, directly
under the engine shaft at the very lowest point of the boat. I think it should
be claeaned out and resealed at all costs because the iron ballast is bedded
in a cemet material which is porous and wicks bilge water up between the
ballast and the inside of the hull. Many people believe blistering is  caused
as much by trapped water inside as by seawater on the outside.
