Hi Gordon,

my name is Guy, have just joined the mailing list 2 days ago and am not sure how to
reply directly from the digest on the mailing list concerning your questions about installing
wheel steering.
I'm the proud owner of "Cyrena", a 1971 Alberg 30 hull # 466 (as per markings on the main)
and am located near the city of Ottawa (Canada) which is about a 5 hour drive North East
of Whitby Ontario. There are 3 or 4 of us Alberg 30 owners on the river up here.
One of the previous owners installed wheel steering on the boat. I bought it last November
after it had been layed up for the winter and I was a little concerned that it would be difficult
to access the winches from behind the wheel. But it turns out the setup works quite well.
The pedestal was installed relatively forward of the cockpit, slightly behind the location of the
winches. The tiller arm was cut off about half way, a hole was made on the end to
accommodate the Autohelm 1000 that came with it (I only use it when I must do long
motoring distances when there is no wind). It also acts as an emergency tiller should anything
go wrong with the wheel steering. The size of the wheel is relatively small and even at that it
can be cumbersome to get around, not really while sailing but mostly when I'm anchored or
docked and need to go into the cabin. I guess if it really bothered me I could look into one of
those removable wheel setups I've seen in some magazine somewhere.
Anyhow, I'm going to finish my winter lay up this afternoon and can get a few more details for
you such as pedestal brand name & model, wheel diameter and exact location of the pedestal.

I hope this helps out. Let me know what else you need to know.
Cheers.
