It also makes changing the water pump impeller a lot easier.  I cut the port
bulkhead out right after I bought Isa Lei.  To put it back in place I use two
1 x 3 pine battens and # 10 wood screws.  I haven't noticed any loss in
strength.  The access also was a great help when I repowered.
