Hi Joe,
My guess would be it's a gangplank to get on board from a pier, tho six feet
does sound a bit short. Could be the boat had been tied up stern to a low
quay or pier sometime during her life, and this was a previous owners
'ingenious' solution to get on board.
The cockpit table idea also might work, though impractical.
And it may be that the previous owner was beachcombing one day, and found this
really beautiful piece of teak floated up on the shore, and brought it back to
his boat, sure of it's value, but not sure of what he was going to do with it,
and now you have a really beautiful piece of teak. That's what's great about
buying second hand boats-the puzzles you find in the backs of lockers, and
bilges, and bunks are a constant source of amuzement. Take my electrical
system, for instance!
Good Luck
