It's called worm-gear steering. When I crewed on a schooner this summer, it had
that type of steering system. It does clear up a lot of room in the cockpit, but
with the Alberg you would have to relocate the engine controls to that box. The
problem with this system is that you cannot "feel" the weather-helm through the
wheel. This should be a major concern because of the weather-helm the Alberg has
(as we all well know). It is also not as easy to go hard-over because you are
stradling the wheel vs. standing behind it.
