John,
I found those two little screws you mentionned just below the
companion way, but unfortunately the plate isn't there. Maybe
some day I'll find the plate tucked away in the bottom of a
locker or drawer somewhere.

Is anyone aware of any other location where the serial number
could be ?  Maybe it was stamped in more than one location
(I hope).
