I agree with George.  A couple extra remarks.
During the backing phase, use plenty of power - stand on it.  As soon as the
boat actually starts going backward, shift to ahead and throw some water over
the rudder.  Leave the rudder for going to port while going ahead - there is
no need to shift the rudder each time you give it backing, you won't be in
reverse long enough to be worth the effort.  Rock back and forth, but you only
need to stay in each ger long enough to start the boat moving.  For these
short bursts of power - use plenty, especially in backing.
