John,

You should find a metal plate below the companionway that has the serial
number.  There have been some variations, but the serial number should
be composed of the length, two-digit year and hull number.  On a 1972
boat, there should also be a Coast Guard id number impressed into
the transom (upper right corner) that also has the hull number 
in it.
