Bob, There should be no ill effects from aged fiberglass that is not
exposed to sunlight.. When I purchased (Janus) the water in the tank
kept comming out funkey. cleaned the best I could.. I decided to open it
up and was glad I did.. It seems the caulking they used 30 years ago was
the best they had but it degraded over time.. I cut off the front V on
the birth. drilled out all the pop rivets and removed the aluminium
cover. I was more concerned about the oxidized metal being injested than
polyester .. The jel coating actually looked good a few pits. fixed
those . Pushed out all the old rivets. I cleaned the metal cover
fiberglassed it and Jel coated the inside. Recaulked with silicone and
new rivets havent had a problem since. good luck... Joel
