Bill, A  few years back, a race was canceled because a nasty thunderstorm 
blew through.  I was less that a quarter mile from the channel, but I had to 
take a compass course to find the bouy.  Visibility was very bad.  A Mirage 
32 about two boats to leward almost took a strike, it hit about 10 feet in 
front of her, and them seconds later, struck her mast head.  It was like 
fireworks exploding. Nothing hit my Alberg.  The mirage had to be pulled that 
night, about 200 little holes all along the waterline, and bulkheads blown 
apart.  
 I thought I found a grounding strap one time, pokeing around, tied to the 
chrome strip at the bow, but don't bet the farm on it.  Other boats near me 
have had strikes, but not me.  Moral : always sail and anchor around boats 
with taller masts.
