Bill, A few years back, a race was canceled because a nasty thunderstorm
blew through. I was less that a quarter mile from the channel, but I had to
take a compass course to find the bouy. Visibility was very bad. A Mirage
32 about two boats to leward almost took a strike, it hit about 10 feet in
front of her, and them seconds later, struck her mast head. It was like
fireworks exploding. Nothing hit my Alberg. The mirage had to be pulled that
night, about 200 little holes all along the waterline, and bulkheads blown
apart.
I thought I found a grounding strap one time, pokeing around, tied to the
chrome strip at the bow, but don't bet the farm on it. Other boats near me
have had strikes, but not me. Moral : always sail and anchor around boats
with taller masts.
