HiJack,
I don't pretend to be an expert on exhaust systems by any means, but two 
factors I have read about are;
1) the mufflerr should be well below the level of the exhaust elbow, on both 
tacks, ie when the boat heels over to port or starboard, and 
2) The exhaust elbow at the manifold should be high enough to allow the 
muffler to be below it on both tacks.
