Lee, The LP is the luff perpendicular.  Measure from the clew to the luff 
bi-secting the luff at 90 degrees.  That is the LP.  and is compared to the J 
 of aprox 10 ft.. so a lp of 170 will be 170 % of 10 ft.  How high you cut 
the clew will make some difference in the overlap up high.  A 170 is ideal 
for winds under 15 K, over that a 155 works well.   Russ
