Catherine, depending on the age of your boat it may not have a visible
hull No. attached anywhere. They didn't become mandatory in the U.S.
until sometime in the mid 70's, tho Whitby - the A30's builder did
provide them for at least some time previously - perhaps Canada had
earlier requirements???? (My 1971 model has one). Another possible
location is on the aft portion of the sea hood (if you have one); look
for a small metal plate riveted there. At any rate the ID no. should
read : "WBW-30-xx-zzz." The WBW indicating Whitby Boat Works; 30, the
length; xx, the year built and zzz, the hull number.
Sail numbers and hull numbers normally ought to be the same altho it's
possible previous owners may have bought used sails with different
numbers somewhere down the line. And some boats were originally
marketed sans sails - the purchaser obtaining canvas separately. Is
your boat documented rather than state registered? If so there'll be
a history trail of previous owners you might be able to contact for
information. And why not contact the Chesapeake Bay Alberg 30
Association? Most of the A30's ever built are - or have been
association members (regardless of location). There's a lot of A30
history in that group.
Re your A4: If you decide not to go the FWC route, be sure you
install a good raw water strainer upstream of the water pump. A Groco
or Perko, etc. And it's good insurance to overhaul your engine's water
pump while it's out of the boat; a new impeller and seals and inspect the
shaft for wear. Easily done and not expensive, however it's somewhat
difficult to get to when installed in the boat.
