Richard, I found a great use for the space.  make a teak batten , 1 1/2 
inches   by 1/4 inches, and just long enough to go across the verticle 
opening about half way up.  Leave the Lid on.  Now you have a great space to 
quickly stow a can of beer or pop when you are ready to tack or such.  The 
batten keeps them safe and spill proof.
