Maybe your asking to much from the sole to withstand the stresses of foot
traffic without some additional support under the sole. It seams to me that
arbitrarily cutting a 18 x 18 inch hole in the cockpit sole without addition
support structure is maybe asking for leaks and possible failure. If I
remember correctly the A30 has alot of additional support designed around all
its hatch openings. Maybe Carl felt that he couldn't install anything larger
than  the original 8" access without additional support... Hummm
