Ken,
I just happen to have the spreaders in my basement for their annual 3 coats of
Flecto varathane varnish. They measure exactly 35, and 3/4 from the mast side
to the inside of the groove on the metal fitting. The metal piece extends
about 3/8 inches past the shroud, and mine has a small screw that screws in,
and captures the shroud. Metal ones may be different. Mine are made of oak.
Check oak ones for dry rot fwhere they enter the metal fitting that goes into
the base on the mast.
This would be the class standard, I imagine. My sailmaker, Skip Boston tells
me that spreaders can be shortened about 5 or 6 % for better pointing. But I
kept mine stock, and incidently stronger. Shorter changes the angles and
gives the mast less support. Besides, why change a great boat.
