Lee... Another idea might be to weld those ss deck fittings and 1"
tube stock in to one unit and get more integrity. I was hoping to use 1 1/2" 
to 2" pipe/ tube myself... I'm sure it can be stronge using 1" tube... I'm
just not sure about the amount required.    Do you any figures.....
