Just to add a bit more grist to your mill, have you considered a
boom crutch, a single vertical pole with a space for the boom at
the top. This is a compromise between a gallows and just a
topping lift.
Another suggestion. When the sail is not up, I pull the boom down
to one side of the traveler with the sheet and to the other side
with a light line. Combined with the upward tension of the topping
lift, the boom is help stationary (except for the stretch in the
lines). I find this preferable to having it swing back and forth
just over my head.
