I have the same original sink pump and it works fine.  New washers can
be made from leather.  This is the traditional way of doing it and they
were called pump leathers rather than washers.  There is a chapter in an
old book I have, called "Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion.  If you can
send me a fax number or address, I will send you a copy of the
appropriate pages. I don't have a scanner.
