Sanders, sounds like you're right about the pipe berth thing.  Might have 
been for a long race, or extra cruising berth.  Where else would you rig a 
pipe berth?
That little hinged box is where the original compas goes.  A truly bad idea.  
When I bought my boat, it had two.  Every time you started the engine the 
compas swung off 90 degrees, so the first  owner had another, compemsated for 
this.  Had to change a compas every time you ran under power, or make mantal 
adjsustments.  I sold the off and put two Saturn compasas each side on the 
bullkhead.  Don't have to lose my bearings to look at the compass.  BUT,  one 
inch by 1/4  (or 3/8) strip of teak about half way up in the opening makes a 
delightful place to store a beer or pop can when you have to tack.  It holda 
about 4 at a time.  Russ Pfeiffer
