Lifelines outside of the shrouds. A little contact between the lifelines and the shrouds is not a problem. I have a Cruising Design Roller furler. I tension pretty hard by tightening the backstay, this also gives me a slight rake to the mast above the lower shrouds, which helps me point to windward. Additionally, this allows me to run the Genoa three-quarters or half open and still have a fairly good shape. I run the Genoa down to half before I begin reefing the main. I tend to set eh shrouds pretty taught. I can ususally move them in a circle of about one-half inch before hitting the wall so to speak. They are not bar hard, but there is very little slack in the leeward side shrouds on a beat with a brisk breeze (rail down with lotsa whitecaps). However, the beam in the cabin that supports the mast has been sistered with half-inch aluminum plates along its length on my boat, so I don't worry about driving the mast through the keel:)
