Joe,

The major difference is the cylinder head and the cooling system.
If you have a Holley thermostat mounted on the head, it's a newer
style.  If the thermostat is mounted on a T-fitting at the 
water outlet of the exhaust manifold, it's an older style.

Of course, it could be a hybrid.  I've got a newer engine with
an older head.  Checking the serial number is another means of
determining which engine you have.
