If you are cruising the lower bay in July Albergers are welcome to
stop by our place which is on Moore Creek at the west side of Fishing
Bay on the north side of the Piankatank River. Chart 12235 shows one
foot at the mouth, but it was dredged to six feet in 1989 and is marked
by red and green daymarkers. There is a privately maintained 4-second
flashing white light on the outermost piling, red # "2".
Fishing Bay, which is just inside Stove Neck Point, is a wide
anchorage, easily found and with good holding. There is a marina and a
boatyard there. Lots of boats stop overnight here going up and down the
bay.
Be aware that the USCG changed the markers in 1996, moving #6 at the
river entrance and adding at least three in Fishing Bay. These do not
show up on all the chart books, though the current NOAA chart (12235)
has them. Nos. 9, 11 and the present 12 were added.
Our creek, which is a bit tighter than Fishing bay itself, is a good
hurricane hole. From red # "12" the entrance bears 327 degrees magnetic.
The channel is narrow, but well-marked and there are rip-rap breakwaters
on both sides of the entrance. Once inside stay to the center of the
creek and you will be o.k. EXCEPT there is a 2 ft bar extending from the
west (left side) about 150 yards inside. Shortly after passing the last
of the entrance markers hug the right (east) side until the creek swings
to the left at the "red" speed limit marker.
We are about 3/4 mile up the creek on an arm (Lucy's Cove) to the
left. Pier is on the left. We will be here through July 6th but are
leaving on the 7th for a week. There is water and power on the pier.
Best call us if you are coming. (804) 776-7947.
