It is intended to hand start the engine in the event your battery goes dead.
It fits over the fly wheel "nut" on the forward end of the engine.  The
handle is designed so a to prevent kick-back (and broken arms).  Although I
do not own one, I question if you could use it effectively due to the
proximity of the cross beam on which the companion way steps rest - could
crack your knuckles and or not get a full rotation.
