Joe,
I'm guessing that the exhaust pipe is starting to rust through
and needs replacing, anyway. The exhaust pipe is generally
standard galvanized (sometimes bronze) pipe. The section
that mixes the cooling water must be bronze; the hot salt
water will dissolve galvanized in no time flat.
As for getting it off the engine, I'd suggest removing the
exhaust manifold. You may end up having to drill out the
bolts, and that's better done in the shop than the engine
room. A4 shops (such as Vosbury's in Annapolis) can sell
you a new flange, if you need one.
