When I installed the wheel we had to cut the rudder shaft tube - it was
a piece of copper pipe encased in fiberglass up to the cockpit sole. We
built a really stout tube of 'glass around the edson stuffing box we
installed. We also reinforced the bearing at the upper end of the
rudderpost (above the new quadrant) to absorb some of the thrust from
the steering cables.
