Joe,

Yes, I sanded off all the diamond pattern.  There were bubbles in the
original laminate that I ground with a sanding drum on a dremel tool
and filled with thicked resin.  Then I put on Brightside primer and 
two coats of Brightside.  After that, I masked off the areas for non-skid
and rolled on a coat of Brightside with the Noskid compound.  It
looks pretty good, except for a few woops on my part.

On Tern II, Tim Silvio built up the non-skid areas slightly so they
stand above the smooth parts.  I'm not sure how he did this.  It
does look a little better that way, but I'm happy with my job.
