Dick, RE poles.  The smaler , adjustable is not a pole, but a whisker pole.  
It's used to hold out a jib when wing on wing.  I't's not strong enough for 
the Chute.  Racing rules now let you use the pole to leward also, although 
the windward side is the normal ome.  You will also need a lift to hold the 
pole up level, and a rig to hold in down so that it doesn't "sky".  Be sure 
to always put the pole on the ring, or slider, with the JAWS UP.  to prevent 
breakage.  There are always atricles, and books to tell you how.  You need to 
study.  It's hard to put all the things in an E mail.
