I sometimes think that roller reefing got a bad rap either because is
wasn't used properly or the builders dispensed with it in the late 70's
because the hardware was too expensive. The secret for easy handling
and getting a fairly decent sail shape when reefed is to roller reef
while under way with the sail full and drawing. You get a nice tight
furl and can do it by yourself if you have someone at the helm or have
an autopilot. The only problem I found was you need one hand to ease
the halyard and one hand to crank the furler. The handle on the crank
supplied is quite short so you have very little torque and your arm can
get very tired after a reef or two. I resolved this by adding an
extension to the handle of the crank making it about twice as long with
lots of torque.
