Jack, sounds like a valve problem only.  Did it happen suddenly? or over time?
 You might have a burned valve seat, or valve, most likely an exhaust.  One 
of the things to watch out for when you lean the engine out.  Have you been 
useing "Valve Tec" or something like that to replace the lead?
Any way, if the rest of the engine is ok, ( and you did get home)  you can do 
a valve job, but I think if you replace any seats it will have to come out 
and go to a machine shop.  Have a good mechanic take a look at it before you 
do anything drastic.
