Tom:  Yes the M4-30 was discontinued.  It is a 4 cylinder that weighs 265 pounds.  You are correct that all of the small block engines are marinized Kubota's.  Mine has the same Hurth transmission with the 2:05 ratio.  I have had the boat 2 years.  The original owner had not used the boat much so the only problem I had was algae growing in the fuel tank.  Once I cleared that out (back in 98) the engine has been great.  It is amazing smooth.  I have a 10 gallon tank under the cockpit sole.
