[alberg30] Furlers in general

With a limited experience with an older Hyde furler on
Indigo, I don't know yet. Both hanks & furlers have
advantages. I was faster changing sail & getting the
jib up and tight with hanks. I had lifeline netting
to help things along on my other boat with winches &
lines back to the cockpit. Of course furling is
faster than going forward, dropping sail & bagging. I
haven't tried sailing with a genoa partly rolled; I
don't imagine that it is very efficient. Conversely,
having put a roller-cut genoa up at the dock, going
out and then unrolling it is easier than hanking on at
the dock or at sea & then raising, since the hanked
sail needs to be secured to the deck or lifelines or it
blows around in your face or overboard.

I have found that my spinnaker sheets sometimes wrap &
jam the furling since the spin block is fairly close to
the top roller, but my masthead arrangement isn't very
good. I had to change to a smaller furling line in
order to wrap up the large genoa; the Hyde drum is
fairly small. My wife prefers me to manage the sails
from the cockpit rather than going forward in any
event, so that is an argument for furlers.

Do those who have furlers like them?

BTW: Did you buy that new car yet?
If not, check this site out.
They're called CarsDirect.com and it's a pretty sweet way to buy a car.
