Bill, I have a Datamarine, and I have no problems in anything less than about 
100 ft.  I don't know who makes the "president"  but all depth finders are 
not the same..
 I don't know just how far my transducer is from the hull, but it should not 
make much difference.  Perhaps your transducer was never intended for this 
use.  Have you had a chance to try a different unit?
