I had a friend who is a local cabinet maker here in Ithaca make new drop
boards about 15 years ago when mine were smashed when the boat was
broken into. He used all solid teak. I have them varnished, and they are
still in near-perfect condition. I'd certainly avoid any plywood if
you're going to the trouble and expense of building them. He "copied"
the pieces of the shattered ones, you might want to see if you could get
your hands on a set that you like to measure and photograph.

Since the break-in, BTW, I installed an air-horn, and a burglar alarm
connected to it that includes magnetic switches from Radio Shack epoxied
to the drop boards and the fiberglass edges of the companionway. Its
only gone off twice in 15 years, but the air horn is a plus too, wakes
up the drunk motor boaters in narrow channels.
