Hi Harlan,
Stargazer's tiller was split, and poorly repaired when we got her.  We bought 
one of West marines laminated tillers off the shelf.  the base had to be 
sanded down a bit to fit into the old tiller fitting, but once fitted, looked 
fine.  I put a couple of extra coats of varnish on before installing.
