[alberg30] Mast support beam

Mon May 22 06:24:36 PDT 2000

Peter,

I went back and reread your message and I'm still not sure what you're
describing. Are you saying the beam itself is sagging? Or is the deck
area just aft of the beam sagging?

If the deck is sagging, it's likely due to water infiltration into the
balsa core causing rot.

The beam on the newer boats is supported, after a fashion, by the
bulkheads separating the head and hanging locker from the forepeak.
It may be that these bulkheads were cut a bit small and don't fill
the space between the overhead liner and the liner forming the sole.
Also, it may be that there is insufficient support under the sole
to support the liner above the hull.
