Brian,
Yes, you should go to 5/16" bolts or double the number of 1/4" bolts.
Also, make sure they are not threaded full length. You don't want the
diameter reduced where the chainplates bear on them.
Backing plates are a good idea. If you can't accomplish that, big
washers are a second choice.
