Thank you Gordon!  Being one of those who couldn't possibly have both, I
had forgotten about pool testing.
You are absolutely correct.  A search on the net will find test kits from
$10-$65US.
If it is sensitive enough to confirm a  residual  chlorine level in the
neighbourhood of 2 PPM, it is simple, can be performed repeatedly, and
will help to ensure continuing water safety under all conditions.
