WinterizingSuggestion before leaving the boat outside in below-freezing
temperatures:

In the water:
1. Run engine for half hour to open thermostat & heat up oil.
2. Close the thru-hull valve.
3. Disconnect raw water intake & put intake hose in bucket of low-toxic car
antifreeze. (you could later put a bypass T in the line to connect up with
a garden hose fitting)
4. Run engine until you see antifreeze coming out of exhaust thru-hull. Do
not run engine without the hose in the antifreeze or your impeller may
disintegrate.
5. Stop engine, drain oil while warm & replace oil filter.
6. Don't run or turn engine again unless you reconnect hose with thru-hull
and open it to water, or have the hose in a bucket of antifreeze.

Out of the water:
7. If the motor has a hand crank and you can turn it without cardiac arrest
you can crank until antifreeze comes out of the exhaust, but if the engine
is cold and the thermostat closed you may not get sufficient antifreeze into
the engine block. Some advocate turning the motor over several times during
the winter to lube things, but this may remove some of the antifreeze.
8. Clean up any oil or soot in engine compartment.
