Historically mild steel wire and other wire was used on rigs...the big
problem was corrosion...no matter how many times you blackened the steel,
treated it with various ministrations, water would work through and cause
failure; sometimes catastrophic - it must be a corrolary to Murphy's Law that
when ever you are in deep ca ca - like pounding seas a thousand miles from
safety, with fifty knot winds, on a lee shore towards an unmarked reef, then
and only then will your diabolical rig decide to part or unravel...Stainless
316 and thereabouts, has a strong tensile strength, and, if kept clean and
inspected, will last a long long time...of course only until you are on that
lee shore with the reef and the fifty knot blow with fifty foot breakers :)

Scott Wallace, sailor of Pearson Electra Spindrift and Bluenose 24 Helldiver
(just replaced old Helldiver's standing rigging with 316 stainless including
upper jumpers, etc. for about $400 from Grand River Rigging in Cleveland,
Ohio - one of the best!
