I am in the process of building new companion way boards. The local
(Charlotte, NC) hardwood place only has 1" rough cut boards for
$18.90 per bd/ft. I am looking for 5 quarter stock so I can finish to
a full 1". I am planning on making the bottom board solid about 8"
and building 2 frames for the top, one to have smoked Lexan and the
other screen.
Any leads on Teak would be appreciated. THANKS

That's a pretty good price. It's around $21/bdft here in Baltimore. We jave
5/4 through 8/4 if needed.

You may have noticed that the public-list at alberg30.org mailing list
has been unusually quiet. For about a week, this list has been
down. I've spent a lot of time, and so has the support group
at the ISP, trying to figure out the problem. I'll send an email
on that list when things are running. In the mean time, it's a
good thing we still have this list running on egroups.

If your hardwood supplier has Iroko (African Teak) it handles and finishes
well and looks just like the original teak on Yankee Star. It also seems to
hold up very well and is 1/3 to 1/2 the price of real teak. The last time I
bought some, it was $5.50 per bd/ft in northern VA. I've replaced almost
all of the teak on Yankee Star (except the toe rails) and it looks great.

As Alan Kefauver mentioned, teak is available around the Annapolis area in
thickness over 4/4. But you might reconsider and stick with the
4/4. I built new companionway boards last year to finished 3/4 size in
rail & stile frames with louvers (now, they were a bear to do.) without any
trouble. I had to make new slides, too, but even the originals were built
to handle 3/4 boards.

(p.s. Alan: Teak is/was a little cheaper in Severna Park.)
