I do not believe ethyl mercapton is added to butane, as it is to propane, so
that you can smell a leak.
If the butane canister leaks the gas will settle in the bilge - I think you can
figure it out from there - Sputnik.
Personally, I do not like compressed, heavier than air, gasses inside the boat -
outside on a BBQ is fine with the tank stored outside lashed to the pushpit on
the aft deck. Many would disagree - to each their own.
