Bill,
a mitre seam is the seam that "splits" the angle of the clew.  a lizzard is
a fairlead.  Friction is reduced by using lignum vitea.  I don't know why it
didn't work on your 40 footer, I've used it on boats from 25 feet to the
USCGC Barque Eagle (where I learned it)  It's never failed me to date.
